The meals
Who can get a meal?
Anyone who needs one. Most of the people we serve are experiencing homelessness, and they come from every age and background. Nobody is asked to qualify, explain themselves or sign anything.
What's in a bag?
A hot entrée (soup, chowder or a casserole, depending on the day), bread, something sweet and a bottle of water. It comes to about 1,500 calories, which is a full dinner.
Where do you serve?
Since October 2025 we have been fully mobile. Each day's team drives the area around Arcata looking for people who could use a meal, and whatever is left at the end goes out again in downtown Arcata.
Why did you stop serving from one spot?
For our first two years people came to us, and we got moved on more than once. In winter, folks had to leave whatever shelter they'd found and walk out into the rain to eat. Taking the food to them made more sense.
Do you feed pets?
Yes. A lot of the people we serve have dogs, and we bring food for them too. Through a local pet rescue we've also been able to arrange spay and neuter care.
Is the food prepared safely?
Everything is cooked in a rented commercial kitchen that meets the food safety and sanitation standards set by the Humboldt County Department of Health.
Volunteering
Do I need any experience?
No. You'll work alongside people who have done it many times, and nobody goes out alone.
How much time does it take?
Cooks, packers and drivers give 1–2 hours a week, some time between 12–3pm. Bakers get a day that fits their schedule. Choppers can prep at home whenever suits them, or at our kitchen between Noon–2pm.
What jobs are there?
Daily teams cook, pack and drive. Food preparers bake bread and desserts or chop fruit and vegetables. See all the roles.
How do I start?
Fill in the sign-up form, or call Jan Carr on (707) 672-9947.
Giving
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Our tax ID is 99-1695234.
What does my money pay for?
Ingredients, bags and containers, insurance, and rent on the commercial kitchen. We don't pay for fuel or delivery, so $25 packs 20 bags.
Can I give things instead of money?
Yes, please. The wish list shows what we need right now. Get in touch before you drop anything off so someone is there to take it.
Can my business, church or school run a collection?
We would love that. Here's how it works and we'll help you set it up.
